drop an empty patch and customise it to make the "passthru/do nothing" patch of your dream
or maybe i misunderstood ?

A couple of ways where it would be useful would be to name a signal in a wire that has been created by a complex series of modules where you come back to it and can't remember how it all works and also like a junction box where you have either a lot of signals going to or coming out of a single pin and you need to experiment with the chain so you don't have to keep reconnecting loads of wires.
