afaik iml is a different process, and the value is applyed only when msg is send from module or script., not each bloc, wich make indeed a great way to make 'pass if chg' for wireless sets of values changing time to time, and very low cpu idle as no buses/wires are needed, so also very handy and powerful in many cases.
I uses it a lot, it's very cool. it's not recommended realtime, (also it's fairly capable of in many cases from what i tried), but better use buses if need constant values transferts, as you can imagine, but in your case it seems cool to go for iml.
don't know about inserts access, never tried. i guess senso could answer you about that.
did you tried to trace and look at the console?, it might help to know infos about the pb.
(but note it can be dangerous to send too much IML messages in a fast way and trace using the console,
