I reckon it also simplifies the internal routing somewhat, although you can create as many virtual sends and receives as you want using the data busses - sending audio or other data practically all over the place. Of course that can also give you unwanted feecback loops if you're not careful...
I did a search in the manual, and this isn't mentioned anywhere. It's maybe worth a mention, since this obviously creates some confusion. Any comments, Olivier?

what i have is one or two channels with the aux send 1 open and one track with it's input changed to aux 1, hence receiving what is sent from the other channels. a quick empirical test seems to show me that the send works only for tracks that are BEFORE the receiving track in order. am i correct with this or am i missing something? if i'm correct, is there a certain reason it is this way?
for your information, i'm currently working on the 3.05b, didn't want to go into the 3.10beta yet.
