That was it! As soon as I opened it I was asked to grant access to the microphone and now everything is doing what I would expect.

Yes, I thought of that just after posting. Usine is not in the list of apps that have requested permission to use the microphone. But it seems dragging the application in to the list isn't allowed, and I can't see another way to add it. I don't recall the usual question asking me to grant it access,...
