Quick start manual and official announcement.
A Quick Start manual made by Vincent Michel is available for download.
Vincent Michel (alias Vincent) and Bjørn Sorknes (alias Bsork) officially join the Sensomusic team. (I should say now corporation!)
Vincent will help me for to write manuals and other communication documents. I’m sure you will appreciate is talent in the Quick Start.
Bjørn, a master in patching questions, will help me to answer to complex request on the forum, and try to maintain the add-ons section.
The new version (2.85) will be probably available at the end of the week.

I've only browsed through the Quick Start, but I must say that it's very well written and I have also learned a couple of tricks!
Nice work!

Thanks, Bjørn, but I really wonder what you still can learn about Usine! Senso told me that he was learning from you!bsork wrote:I've only browsed through the Quick Start, but I must say that it's very well written and I have also learned a couple of tricks!

I still have a lot to learn Vincent - we all do!
It's the little things that count sometimes, and I was referring to the small tricks scattered around in the manual. In particular to the hint about "re-connecting" an existing wire to delete it. Very handy in a complex patch with wires going everywhere, and it's a bit cumbersome to find the little dot in the middle of a line to select and delete it.
Now we're all waiting eagerly for the next release!

No, I'll not continue with the sequencer right now, since some great and terrific changes will come. If you knew which ones, you'd just stop play music and look for a gun to shoot time, days, weeks (and more) not to wait for those changes!
Well, I am thinking about a set of patches for VSTi, organized in a workspace, what do you think? I'll compose Usine's theme :p
Notice that my orientation is to play music, not to make tracks and look at them.
As a matter of fact, I ask the question: what VSTi do you use?
Mine are:
- NI Absynth
- NI Reaktor
- NI FM8
- Arturia Moog Modular
- And very soon Giga VI
- Istvan Kaldor DirtBag (free; I love this Hammond emulation, Emerson can brake it twice a day, so we'll brake it together!)...
From a VSTi to another, things don't work exactly the same... I have to think about let's say three of them, working differently.
Some of us are also used to standalone apps, I'm thinking to Reason 3 or GigaStudio. Any other?
The point is that this future tutorial must be flexible enough to be used with the VSTi you have on your computer...
Maybe during august, no promises...

Vincent, first off thank you for the guide. Just d/l it but a scan of it shows me it looks highly useful.Vincent wrote:As a matter of fact, I ask the question: what VSTi do you use?

Reaktor is an instrument I tend to focus on more as it offers so many different styles and sound / music generation. Two new synths (for me) intrigue me very much though I just started to work with them, one is TerraTec's Komplexor and the other u-he's Zebra 2. On top of all of that I've just rolled up my sleeves to familiarize myself with Max / MSP. While Hipno or Pluggo never really inspired me, there are patches in Max that blow me away and motivate me, along with some of the 3rd party externals out there on the web.
At this point I have no clue on how to use Max with Usine. Maybe it's not even possible at this point.
Anyway, thanks for the work and participation here4.

I'm sure I'll include Reaktor in my next Tuto, as it's also a great modular and it's sound in Usine, with some VST for additional FX, is really exciting.

One of the things I've found with Reaktor / Usine is that parameters are not always clear AND not always relevant. However this maybe more Reaktor related and off topic.Vincent wrote:I'm sure I'll include Reaktor in my next Tuto, as it's also a great modular and it's sound in Usine, with some VST for additional FX, is really exciting.
Quickly though -
I set up Metaphysical so all the parameters via faders sit in the grid. All the params were present with the exception of two of the low cut filters. So why would that be the case ? Is it something the ensemble creator left out or some reason it's not being seen by Usine ?
Second, as I mentioned above, there might be a whole set of params, i.e. POOO!, P0002, P0003, etc. However they seem to not have any effect on the actual ensemble. I think when perhaps there are multiple instruments this happens. Not sure though as I haven't done full research into it.
One thing I've been wanting to figure out, is to take some of the Reaktor sequencers, strip out the actual sequencer but leave the sound generation and then create my snapshots in Usine.
Stuart
Hi,
As far as i know it's a matter of setting correctly the "automation IDs" in Reaktor for the ensemble you're using.
In most of the "factory" ensembles, these IDs (which correspond to Usines faders P000, P001, etc..) are set in a weird way.
So you have to set the "BASE ID, MAX ID in Use" etc.. in Reaktor to make the IDs correspond to the right faders in Usine.
Especially when there are multiple instruments in the ensemble, then you have to use the "Instrument up, Instrument down, sort, etc.." functions. But be careful because then it can completely mess up the ensemble snapshots.
This shows for me one thing that could really be imrpoved in reaktor (which I use and like a lot): communication with the external world.
Well I don't know if I'm clear, but actually it's easier to do than to explain.
Rgds,
B.

Is not it simpler to do a MidiLearn in Reaktor and forget about it's controls IDs which are absolutely aleatory?
This question of controls IDs is specially risky if you've planned to change Reaktor's Ensembles in the same Usine's patch.
My opinion is to go to the simpler way each time it's possible. That is, when plugging Reaktor in Usine, to make Usine's philosophy and concepts prevail over Reaktor's ones. I mean, if I have many Usine's patches containing many different plugs with many different philosophy, I'll try to have a common patch behavior, philosophy and interface-panel look for all of them. This is my modular thought.
That will be one of the main point I'll try to show in this future tuto.

I'm not really ready to post the official release.
I'll post a beta version very soon.
