hi all,

just a quick one - how does a 24" monitor + a 17" one with the touch screen kit sounds like? the idea would be to use the smaller one only to visualize VST/VSTi GUIs (and of course use a finger to interact)....

My feeling is that it would not work...as far as i know, a touch screen kit is just something that allows to use the mouse pointer with a finger, so i suppose the down left angle of the touch panel must match the "0" coordinate of the "desktop area", ie if i apply a touch panel on the monitor on which i extend the desktop, i end up moving the mouse cursor on the other monitor....

Hope i've been clear!

Thanks in advance,
Goyya :)

if you disable the " interface in main mode " in your setup , you can have the Interface builder on your 17 "
this way , you can interact with finger on it .and see the grid mode on the left and other monitor .
of course you can't use your mouse in the same time..
but it's really fast to act with finger , then use the mouse on the left monitor when needed..

should work but from what i feel the touch panel will interact on main display only, not "extended" one, so the 17 will have to be the main one, with ib in stand alone full window as nay said.
however this has to be check, cause there might be the problem as mentioned that the pointing would be in absolute mode, and so would mean the panel control the 2x screen area. If I well remember there is an option concerning multiple monitor on my touch panel drivers.

I will try to test this tonight and report, i got a second monitor to check..

.. so Ive made the test and it works: there is a "compatible multi monitor" option.

so here i got a laptop 17lcd with the touch panel on it, i was able to extend desktop to another 19" keeping the panel controling normally the whole 17 only area.

if I swap the main display to be the 19' ext one, then the panel controls the 19 one (but is too small of course, but also discovered an option to map a portion of the screen, so ie the 17inch can control and match 17inch inside the 19, less interesting but..)

so mean it will work with any panel fitting one of the screen size, in your case the 17"

thanks guys - i was pretty sure i would have found an answer here! in Italy we say "hunger comes while eating"...meaning that (after 23fx23's answer) i wonder if three monitors could be used at the same time (apart from having i guess two video interfaces or anyway a compatible setup).....

the original question stemmed from the fact that i have a BCF and a BCR, and two 17" monitors....i struggled to configure them in a comfortable way (with Cubase), and i quite reached the point - anyway, most of the times using the mouse is faster.....

So i thought to replace the BCR with a "touch-panelled" 17", plus a bigger monitor for the arrangement view - and tonight, i thought it would be cool to do the same with the BCF too...

Anyway, i think that having two touch panels doesnt work - also, some cost calculation is needed, though i guess a new big LCD screen + 17" touch panel kit probably wins over Windows 7 (vs XP at the moment) + big LCD touch screen (which may be a reasonable alternative)....

thanks again,

Goyya :)

that's cool i was wondering about it too..

I wonder how long to wait for descent multitouch layer/ portable lcd, and what kind of prices ranges we could expect from overlays multitouch layers, might be soon an option too..
on the other hand, 2x single touch pannels is also a cheap solution.

personnaly i would take one touch panel, but would keep one physical control, one of the BCR/BCF,
this will let you time to test and review your setup, and mabe soon later multitouch layers will come.
also cause i find (at least mine) touch layer are great for enabling swich or low/latency precision controls but
i still prefer a reat pot/fader for continuous controller especially when fast/precise reponse is needed ie live tweaking a crossfader. my 2 cent

@23fx23: which brand of touch panel you have chosen? in another thread (opened by me, BTW) you told that you got your one for 75 EUR on ebay...i just wanted to check and be sure that if i get one on ebay, its driver allow for multi-monitor use...

Thanks in advance!

yes mine is the same as nay I guess, cause it was coming from virtual village on ebay. they were the cheapest i found and are compatible with multimonitor. If I well remember Nay you also managed to have a slight reduction for virtual village?

Im not sure they are the best, basically they are 4wire resistive with 2048 points resolution if i well remember, there are some 5, even 8 wire resistive with 4096 resolution., but i find it's very descent for the price as i said before very accurate for touch enabling, a bit less for fast/precise translation but correct. And i m not sure worth taking a higher price range as multitouch should come soon. magictouch must be a bit better, easier to install (not that hard, check nay video) but more expensive..

Nay link is exactly the model I got, 75 euros for a 15inch but didn't remember post cost were that high..so that about 100e for 15inch,
the 17 inch cost 90e with 30e shipping so around 120e. that said if we can really expect some 200e dual touch optical LCD in a few days, might worth selling even cheap your 17..

and yup as nay said most of ebay layers seems also from them.
so if you choose this kind of model, might be better take on virtual village directly, just check the ratio but should be this one/
