I want to be able to do something simple: press a button on my midi controller and have Usine unload the current VSTI and load another. (I don't want to have to load several and then just switch to another track--I'm working with piano vsti's, so the memory load would be too high.)

Is it possible to set up Usine this way?

Hi,

I''m not sure you can but you can do the following:
- have all your VSTi's in ONE patch on ONE track, and assign switches to the on/bypass inlets, then map these switches to you midi controller's buttons (or even make a logical circuit so that only one switch is enabled at one time).
Actually when the VTSi are "bypassed" they don't eat any more CPU (or far less than when "on") (but they eat RAM of course if you use sample based instruments).

You could use the Load Patch module. It's probably most practical to create a patch where you do the selection, and then load the VSTi patches into another slot in the grid.

I've created the setup I wanted by creating separate workspaces for each piano, inserting a button in each patch that opens another workspace, and then assigning each button to a midi cc. (Loading patches didn't work: pianos are just too big.)

I'm still getting system freezes far too often while playing a 600 meg piano. The sound shuts down, the meter says I'm at 98%, and I have to close the program. Is there a way to optimize Usine to handle large files better? Would be very nice to have direct from disk sample playing, but there shouldn't be too much of a problem, now--I have 1.5 gigs of memory.

But I do like the look and feel of Usine, and the way it lets me control the sounds.
