Sampler : File vs memory
Hi guys,
I had a show yesterday, very simple, just launching stereo sounds with Usine. I had a glitch, the sound stop for a half second, clicked and start again (just one time in a one hour show). It really hard to know where did it come from (a bug, laptop, HD, sound card, power supply).
Anyway I was wondering what in your experience, do you consider as the more stable : reading your sound files from the HD or the memory ?
For small samples, I guess it is obvious but in my case, I often have long files : up to 10 mn in 2 or 4 channels. I sometimes read 2 sounds at the same time and I was a bit afraid to put such big files in the memory. In one hand I now have a new laptop with with 3 gb, and in the other hand, I also have a 7200 t/m HD
What do you recommend ? .
Cheers
Kenan

long files are always better placed in memory to avoid glitches , but there's many parameters to consider; speed of the memory, cpu, ...not always easy to find the good compromise
Usine has a powerful audio buffer management, and normally you should be able to read from the hard disk, at least, 32 stereo samples at the same time without any trouble.
If you have glitches, try to change the buffer size in the setup but in your case you should not.
About loading samples in memory first check the tip :

If you have enabled the3GB switch, you can load in memory around 250 minutes of mono samples. (125 min of stereo and so on)

Hi, this is actual for me too. I'm using 16/24bit mono files only. [through patches sound comes stereo and quadro]
1. is here difference on CPU if file on memory or file on HD?
2. witch files better place in memory - long or short? I often use huge amount of small files[milliseconds long] in random playback and change lists instead of samples.
3. how can HD playback reflect on sound - glitches or something else?

low cpu for memory choice1. is here difference on CPU if file on memory or file on HD?
long files are the first choice2. witch files better place in memory - long or short? I often use huge amount of small files[milliseconds long] in random playback and change lists instead of samples.
if you have an Hd almost full, with no regular defragmentation , this can increase problems...?3. how can HD playback reflect on sound - glitches or something else?
ok. thanks for info.nay-seven wrote:low cpu for memory choice1. is here difference on CPU if file on memory or file on HD?

Hi guys,
I made a test with my files in memory. I discovered that the whole list of the player is charged in the memory. It's good to know...

Hello Ken29,
If you want a single sound is loaded each time in the sampler tries to use a listbox with the output "text" rather than "commatext".
