would it be possible to build something like this in usine?

hi
im new to this forum and usine, right now im trying out the free version to see if usine is for me
im using studio one pro to make my music
hopefully next year i will finally start playing live more,so im looking for a great live host
so i have a few questions
would it be possible to "build" a simple version of something like ableton lives session view in usine?
or something similar, where i can drag n drop my own songs(mp3,wavs or whatever)

yes, definitively possible and as i was answering you on the other post
the Usine Stage can be the good choice, 8 tracks , 2 masters, conductor and more
You can yet check this lessons and all about the grid mode to familiarize you with the grid concept

thanks sounds good,i have ableton live intro, but i think the maximum of 8 scenes per project is very limiting so would hope it would be possible to build my own sort of session view but with more "scenes"
Remember that Usine is a modular host, this mean in the Stage version, you have 8 patches per track but patches can contains sub-patches..and so

really looking forward to testing the new version, and i actually think im gonna buy the stage version and see if i can build me something usefull

the video you refer is a touchscreen interface for Live, but you can built some cool patch too , specially with the new audio matrix module

yeah i know its for live,i just meant was thinking on about trying to build a interface like that but without having to run ableton live intro at all
will see if i can get my head around it when i buy the stage version

i found a new video on youtube that shows the interface im after, its for touch but maybe it would still be possible to build something like this without touch?

yes, the 23FX patches are incredible and I'm sure he can help you to built this kind of interface with the new matrix modules
and of course all Usine don't need touchscreen , you can also use a mouse or midi controllers

yes you can find some of them in the addons, but I've to prevent you : it's really complex patches , don't be afraid...your's will be more simple

yeah they sure are complex, but think they will help me learn about usine and let me see how things can be build,i will use that patch as inspiration, and see if i can build a simpler patch, when usine stage is available
I just bought Usine as well, this is the kind of thing I would love to build as well an ableton like 'scenes' clip triggering functionality.
Cool, this way you can work together with 23FX for a collaborative Addon !
and I'm sure other users will join you

was wondering could the conducter be used to store audio files somehow,or is there another way to store/load up audiofiles sort of like the live session view?
Hi mates, sorry, overbusy those times
yup an usine session view would be great, we are several to reflect on this (i think joffo is interested too). Ive started to think about it.
(my idea is to use the matrix as in the vid, but allowing to drop files or vst on cells, and each cell would recall a preset of everyting on the track, being usine sampler, vsts ect and extend with some routing orders recall..) . The coming next audio matrix will help a lot too..
a collaborative work on this can be cgreat, no pb for me to help as much as i can, but sadly for next month i will be out...

yeah i think the audio matrix will be nice,i really think you did a great job with apc,and maybe that would be a awesome place to look for ideas/inspiration,it has alot of stuff like the session view, and maybe theres a way to make it work without the need to run ableton live alongside it?
when i get usine stage, would it be ok if i maybe tried to "using stuff from your apc patch, and tried out different new things?
i havent used usine before,so it would help me ato learn about how usine works, when i can see how you made the apc patch

yeah sure no pb, ill mail you V2, however it is quite complex and use a lot scripting and advanced usine feature. I should maybe help you on a simpler start basis to learn usine cause even me im lost in that patch. but for all matrix/session view stuff, scripting comes necessary at some point. i advice you to make your hands on usine matrix and arrays, then scripting by waiting. i will try to make a simpler exemple where cells controls usine sampler (sample nb) using only modules.

i was thinking the audio matrix could be used for the cells, and then there need to be a way to store files, like the session view works, dont really know how to do that though?
there are multiples possible ways. the simpler is using matrix and several samplers (one per 'track'), then on output of matrix you got pins of last clicked cell, column and row nb. col = track would dispatch the infos to corresponding sampler(using dispatcher). the infos would be row nb= sample nb of sampler. So in fact all infos are stored in samplers list, no need to bother.
But i was more thinking about another way, more complex but more modular: using preset manager. each cell would correspond to a preset. a preset could then recall anything in the patch (ie sample file name/ nb, pitch, loop settings, volume, vsts params ect...). And building a little script to handle drag and drop (samples or vst) would be a sexy add to that, but it's a bit complex to start with...
try the first step: 4x4 matrix with 4 samplers, each filled with 4 samples, and trig them via the matrix 'session grid'. if you don't manage ill make ya a pic.

here a really really basic example
array min=0, max =1
first cell run the sample in loop mode , second cell reverse and so

i really need to take the time to get my head around this, but it has been a long time since im so excited about a piece og music software:)

He is using the 'Array - Display or Set' I believe
you have to unlock the control panel and move your elements, or set the array as
where option = invisible cause we only need the matrix visible here
btw , the array is only here for educational purpose, you can also choose 16 faders option when you insert the matrix module, will be the same..

right now im just messing with the interface, next i need to get sound, and if and how to make each row a "track/channel"in a mixer enviroment, and also gonna find a way to "store/load" audio files to the cells
looking forward to see how the new audio matrix will work out
another screenshot
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/8959/m ... rfacep.jpg
the screenshot consists of 3 matrixes with a "fader"linked between all 3 matrixes that lets you set the size of the cells
i dont know how practical that way is,maybe others have other ideas how this should/could be done:)

need to figure out a way to make each row like its own track/channel(if possible)
and need to find out how to incorporate a mixer somehow
and then i need to get it all working:)
so far i really like this

i made a very quick basic exemple too. it's based on multiples listbox in polyphonic patch, instead of matrix to make it simpler. the cool thing with LB is you can easy drag and drop to add a file, a matrix based session view will be more sexy ,but to be really like ableton (scroll, move, delete, add anywhere ect, it' s a much more complex (but fairly doable) thing that necessary imply scripting imo, so better start simple and more fun wiring to catch basic concepts.
simple_session
to add mixer you can check the module Mixer in audio and connect an array on input.

man this is exciting:)

oops oh yeah i forgot about poly in free version.. and yup, to learn better have a look and tweak subpatchs
.
yeah pick up the stage it's insane valuable imo, won't regret the invest for sure. plus the coming next release will be really hot.

If you wanna test in free version without poly you can replicate this patch and then clone it several time:
can click on 'edit layout' on listbox and choose to 'hide file path'. if wanna quantize trig, right click on listbox and choose quantize.
can drag and drop to add a file from browser, and open list to sort.
here it's very basic, if you set sync to bar and your master tempo, this suppose your loops are or one bar right tempo, it's not waping and stretching, but using a variance with grain sampler can allow strech 'n fit tempo... one later step

i just talked to a old friend about usine,he used to use it when it was around version 4,and i mentioned something about there was a way to add a track(like in every other audio software)and then you could add grid lines
sort of like the session view in ableton
is that still possible in the pro version?or has that changed??

man cant wait untill usine stage gets here:)
yeah, after all the grid more is maybeexactly what' you are after, in fact it is usine session view.
it's simple yet endlessly modular, it's like in ableton , can add tracks and lines, trigg lines but the main difference is each 'clip' can be any patch (that can contain X subpatchs ect..endless) + you get the mixer right away, save cpu when disablig patchs, ability to move patchs ect...
don't know why we search so complex sometimes

just wondering if the above stuff also would be possible in usine stage??
i know i properly would upgrade to pro version later though, but would be sweet if it would be possible in stage

yes i think grid mode is avaible in stage version, it's just limited to a 8X8 matrix, wheras pro is up to 32x32.
but as in a patch you can make submixers of several subpatchs, it's virtually unilimited

i have been experimenting alittle with the possibilitys to have a play button that triggers say line 1 of all available tracks at the same time(the buttons on the left is just to small for me to be usefull right now)
and i would like to have a button so i dont have to remember alot of new shortcuts
but for this to work i would have to some how connect the play button across all tracks, and i dont know if thats possible??

Here a workaround :
each button send a note on message ( but you can use CC if you want of course)
i use canal 16 to avoid conflict
i use the module send Midi to Usine ( modules/inputs-outputs)
now you just have to use midi learn for each of your small lines buttons

thanks man gonna try it out tommorow, gonna go to bed now:)
Ive made a little 'scene launcher patch that should let you easy customize size of triggers
I try to explain it in that pic. It's quite simple (25 modules), yet it covers and shows several usine aspects:
the GUI stuff, the poly stuff, the text and array stuff, the interface control and IML as a litlle cherry on the cake

you can DL and drop this patch on master.
Scene Launcher
Ive seen you dllike to have a control over cellz size, so next we will make our own session view GUI with a matrix we can run full screen and customize, very easy if you wanna try:
We just keep the Select grid module, and we connect it's line input to MX row, and track input to MX col. and MouseDwn to select. Done.each time we trigg a matrix cell it triggz the corresponding grid patch

only the visual feedback is little more tricky and need a script for exclusive per col cell selection, but bsork made one already.
. Ill show ya later if ya want how to make a second MX, or keep one col as scene trigger and updtate all the MX visual feedback.
(but running out of time, need to export sound for another usiner too
hope it helps

Cool patch 23fx !
Here my little contribution, maybe can be useful for others too, it's a template to drag & drop wav files but with a smaller player
just put this folder in your Usine/files/templates folder
now, when you drag & drop a wav on a panel you'll have a new choice " MiniWavPlayer"
and you'll obtain this :

well done nay, that was exactly a step i wanted to do too...Maybe a cool one would be a template for a grain sampler too (you know so we put duration and it stretch to fit master tempo, so various loops can be synced). well it's time for me to investigate templates
cool , you rock ! now we v got our audio Clips
awesome work!

cool job.
just a small tip
Instead of putting the patch in the Master section you can consider the new object:

@ olivier that's exactly what i did at first, was on cell0 with alway calc, but then thought we could win one more cell/line by doing so.
good reminder anyway.
good reminder anyway.
this stuff is cool, but in fact i feel we are going wrong way:
here for a 32x32 with actual tek that means 1024 samplers are loaded in the wksp, that sounds huge!, in reality, only one per track is needed...
So after all, im pretty sure a different tek based on Matrix + PM would suit better as a session view replacement.
Matrix can reveive droped file, have an extendable size, can be scrollable, put in IB or other, remains visually fixed ect, it's modular enough to fit all requests of a 'session view'. ie we could drop a wav file on each cell, and it would remote each spreaded track samplers (to benefit from multicore), so only 32 samplers instead of 1024. i supose we could drop other stuff like midi sequences or VST/Vstis ect (I already did that, checking droped extension) to make tracks audio or midi like in ableton and it could go even deeper as
we could load custom patches. we could then make same system of a lttle window/popup displaying cliqued cell patch, while Mx would remain fixed grid size, wich imo better fit the session job (but grid is better in others areas)
so It would have low processing in itself one shot job, be faster to load on open wksp ect, many advantages, but much more complex scripts to deal with...anyway i will do it for me, i already started and have the scrollableMx,DropFile updates list and other needed stuff scripts or patchs done at least once so i know it is a possible job...so if anyone wanna join the party by ideas/patchs/script..
My idea/ideal is actually this: the session view would be a matrix. each col remotes one usine track. each cell correspond to a PM preset that controls a 'Main track patch'. in this track patch (one per track) there are:
A) 3 'generative Modes' choices subpatchs avaible:
1) sampler based, 2) Midi+Vsti config, 3) 'load custom patch'.
followed by
B) a VST/patch chainer that allows dynamic reloading/re-routing/re-ordering (i already worked on that and got working as a subpatch).
so if ie we drop a wavfile on a cell, the patch receives mode 1, and the preset recall droped file path and all associated sampler settings.
if we drop a midi file, it receives mode 2 and load the sequence to play in pianoroll + the vsti + recall all the vsti setting.
if we drop a patch, it loads that patch.
if we drop a VST, it open the chainer window and we can place it on the chain.
All thoses infos need to be stored/recalled for each Mx cellz. eaaaassssiine
arf wanna have time to patch that, but it won't be for now...
here for a 32x32 with actual tek that means 1024 samplers are loaded in the wksp, that sounds huge!, in reality, only one per track is needed...
All thoses infos need to be stored/recalled for each Mx cellz. eaaaassssiine

of course as always , there's different way to use Usine and your solution seems great too!
we can continue developing the 2 solutions and offer more choice to users

yeah, sure, plus the grid is very interesting. let's keep on pushing booth!
@23fx : you're definitively a master!

one small question,i cant seem to figure out,how do i get the launcher placed on master?23fx23 wrote:http://www.sensomusic.com/forums/upload ... scenes.jpg
you can DL and drop this patch on master.
Scene Launcher
hope it helps
also i cant seem to find the select grid matrix?is that a custom module?
selectgid module is in /InterfaceControl. the master is on top above the grid as shown in the red circle in the pic. above there are nb 1 and 2. clic on nb1 it opens the empty patch window, then make 'open patch' to pick the patch scene_launcher

MMmm strange, are you running 5.7 RC1, the module is here in /modules /interfaceControl

but if you pick the patch, it should be already in, nothing to wire more..

ive been making a matrix using this
Ive seen you dllike to have a control over cellz size, so next we will make our own session view GUI with a matrix we can run full screen and customize, very easy if you wanna try:
We just keep the Select grid module, and we connect it's line input to MX row, and track input to MX col. and MouseDwn to select. Done.each time we trigg a matrix cell it triggz the corresponding grid patch
http://www.sensomusic.com/forums/upload ... 20CTRL.jpg
its a 32+32 matrix was wondering is there anywhere i can control the width of the cells, what i would like it to look like is have the cells the same way as they are when you make them in the grid
i have attaced the matrix i have been working on,is there anyway i can change the width of the cells so they are the same size as when you create a cell in a track?
http://www.sendspace.com/file/81p26n
i know i can use the numofcols, but is there a way to have a "fixed"way so the cells always stay the same?
my idea with this matrix is to have 32 tracks each with 32 lines
i havent even started looking at this interface in the interface builder, think we can make some good looking stuff in there:)

thanks, would it be safe to delete the "older"ones?(ive used the older ones in my workspace)nay-seven wrote:I've updated the micro series, better look, same link ( post above )
yes or overwrite them cause I've keep the same name for the patches
hope it's not a too complex workspace cause I'm afraid you loose your settings for each one :/

nahh its a simple workspace so far, just need to exchange the miniplayer with the microplayer in the cells that has audio files
i used your tip with putting a button in the empty cells so that they gets saved with the workspace btw, works fine, though i wouldnt mind having a better option:)

An other way to save your template workspace :
fill your cells with the empty patches in the templates folder
MicroGrainPlayer.pat
MicroWavPlayer.pat
activate the play for all
save your template
now select the cells and drag & drop your wave files directly on the wave display
note that the cell refresh only when you activate it

im working on a interface, that so far consist of ca 10 tracks with 20 cells in each
my goal is to find a way to have 32 tracks with 32 cells each consisting of nay-sevens microplayer
but for now im running out of memory
could someone look at my workspace and see if theres something i can do to make it less memory demanding?
and the upgrade ram is on the top of my list
my computer spec
win xp pro sp 3
intel dualcore 6600 2.40ghz with 2gb of ram
heres a link to the workspace

if you use large files, you can set the sample location= file

well, you open 200 instances of the patch ! so it use memory here too
maybe as said 23fx it's maybe not the good solution for your needs
don't know , have to think about it

how do you want to use this, you want play only 1 file per track or you want play several files in the same time too..?

yeah think i might need to re-think thisnay-seven wrote:how do you want to use this, you want play only 1 file per track or you want play several files in the same time too..?
well the idea was to use it sort of like abletons session view works
yes, but in Ableton Live you run several file per track or only one, cause this change a lot the solution we can find ?

im gonna try out building the interface from the thoughts 23fx23 had about
having 32 tracks and 1 cell per track in a matrix im just gonna mess with building a interface, right now im not skilled enough to dive into the more advanced stuff

here a idea, using the exclusive script of the matrix pack and some bus and mapper values
download
edit: in the choice sub-patch , replace the x+1 by a x-1 module

with my other failed attempt earlier today with making a "grid-based"session view i also belive that 23fx23 idea would make most sense, ive started exploring different things, but all the scripting stuff i will let up to some more experienced
will post what i come up with when im done

i came to think of a way for simple simple,im gonna try it out tommoor
its having a sampler for drums,a sampler for bass etc
then you load(via a list)all the drums for your set in one sampler, all your bass in another etc
and then use the matrix to trigger them
i will test it out tommorow to see how it works
this is just a simple idea.

i have started taking a closer look at 23fx23 s apc workspace, trying to learn through trial and error how things work in usine, and im having a blast
where do i read up on having a crosfader running between 2 matrixes
so that when the crossfader is left it gives full sound to the matrix on the left and right =full sound to matrix on the right??
heres a workspace with the crossfader and 1 matrix
