Grid Arrangement
Hi guys, I am very new to Hollyhocks and trying to get my head around it. I am mainly looking to use it from live performance.
I tend to produce all my stuff in Ableton and would like to then transfer my stems to the Grid of Usine Hollyhock. The first problem I encounter is how to go about organising a long stem in sections, I would like for example to divid my long stem in Intro, Verse etc.... but I can't find a way to cut it properly, is that something that has to be done beforehand and can't be done inside the program?
Cheers!

Hi,
if I understood properly you're aiming to put different part of your song into different section of the grid in order to be manipulated right? If yer the grid is not specifically built for that purpose (altought I'd really wish so I could use it for live looping purposes) but however you can do what you want.
The simplest way is to cut the song part within ableton and export them, then within hollyhock create as many racks as you're parts are and put a player or a sampler into a patch on every rack, then load one file on every player/sampler. Place the racks within the grid and set play-stop-loop for each section of the grid(taht correspond to a single rack where is loaded a part of your song) as you wish.
I hope to asnwered correctly to you.
Have a nice day

Exactly, thanks! It's a bit of extra work but sounds like a good compromise for now
I am also interested in live looping etc.. and the Usine's grid is quite an interesting approach for live performances, hopefully in the next version it will be possible to cut our wave files into sections.
in HH2 you can make use of "start pos" and "end pos" to play only parts of what you have recorded.

the only thing with "start pos" and "end pos" is that it doesn't seem very precise unless I am missing something, but it is displayed in %. If I could have it in bars/beats then it would be easier to cut long files between samplers.
it is 32bit float, so it is rather precise.
just have to do the math :
for exemple if you recorded 4 bars of 4 quater notes and want to listen to last bar, you set the start pos to 3/4
to listen from second beat : 2/16
you can also play the sample in single shot and retrig it each measure (for exemple) so it stay in sync.

Yes Oli, but anyway it's still not as immediate as it should, especially if you need to build something more complex such as an arrangement where you record loop that must be played/stopped in precise part of the song automatically (pedal free loop). I really wish that HH3 will have these features ready to go because I need them and the wait for the new version is becoming pissing to my side also because there are almost zero anticipations on it as all
You could make a subpatch that does just what you need and use it when relevant.
HH is capable to accomodate any taste in music, it is its strength.
But you need to dig into it to make it do what you want. This way you can be really creative instead of walking into someone else footpaths as with some other DAW.
I am not into sync thing, but I'll try to find some time to do a exemple patch for you, soonish.
cheers

Thanks Oli, sub patch sounds like a great idea, HH is still a big mystery for me but definitely looks incredible powerful. I am looking for exactly what Shintylla described since I am importing my stems from Ableton and some of them are needed to be starting and stopping at precise times or triggered.
I know what I am looking for sounds very close to what the clip view of Ableton is, but the for me the linear grid of HH and the device view is much more interesting.

very crude attempt, making use of the grid and the preset to trig some samples.
of course I put some elements of incertainty as straigth repetition and perfect sync is only for military purpose.

Great attempt Oli. What I wish is somewhat more complex. Forgive me if I am sometimes polemic with HH2 but being a full time worker I don't have much time to build patches and I am sure that functions could get accessed in a more simple way with the right software upgrades.
I'm working on the patch. I'm also looking for a sampler that instead of the audio records the midi data, because I make finger drumming and it redundant recording audio instead of the midi from my akai. Is it present in Usine?

You can try to record midi with the pianoroll
