No midi vst sound on demo

Hi downloaded the demo and it mostly works apart from no sound when i patch any of my vst instruments into a rack. I have my midi keyboard enabled in the settings panel and also placed into the input section of the rack channel. The readout from the input channel settings shows that the channel is receiving midi data but in the vst instrument patch which is connected to/via both the audio outputs and to a midi in just says no midi input. Is this just a security feature that will resolve itself if i purchase or is it something else?
