Audio Device Selection on Initialization

Unread post by dmitriyc » 18 Mar 2021, 18:24

Hello there. It seems that every time I restart Usine, it doesn't want to initialize the input audio (from a video digitizer) until i pick a different audio driver from the menu. For example; if i select windows audio, it stays that way once it restarts, but the audio coming in is not the audio i want. I'm not sure what i'm seeing - its audio but not my input audio. Weird. I switch to directsound and the input audio i want starts working. After switching from windows audio to directsound and back to windows audio, it still works the way intended, but not at the start of the software. So my question: is there any way I can select/reselect the audio driver from patch initialization? Or is there a 3d party driver that you would recommend that would be more stable?

I recommend to use ASIO drivers. The best is ASIO4ALL, it encapsulates the WDM driver but works much better.
Unfortunately, there is no way to change the sound devices in a patch.
We plan to create a fast initialization mode for ASIO drivers in the next releases.

Hey Senso, as usual thank you very much for the wisdom. Very much looking forward to purchasing the next version. Poking around more, I found that there is nothing in the system settings patch that would activate the audio driver, however when I am in the system menu from the gear icon on the left, the audio engages when i deselect or select inputs or outputs via the checkboxes. Is there a script or something that could let me do that upon initialization?

Hello,

The menu from the gear ion is the devices menu.
Remember that those devices are simple patches, so you can easily edit them. And add a volume module with a mute switch. Then, you activate or not audio input.

SylvainT thanks for the input, however I'm talking about getting audio from a video capture device by selecting it as an input in the device menu. This audio does not instantiate upon initialization of Usine until I go into the actual menu and literally change any checked square or drop down. Then it seems to "wake up" and start delivering the audio already in progress. Otherwise i get (what i suspect is) a false noise floor that has so many decibels, that it could be mistaken for audio signal, but it is not. I can see that by pausing what is playing. The audio does not go away. Nor if there is a prevalent beat, does the audio jump when it happens. Again, this is not about patching but actually having the input audio initiate itself upon startup.

Just as a quick sidenote: ASIO4ALL driver worked wonders. Am able to successfully initiate my audio input on initialization. Thanks!

For me though ASIO4All doesn't give any performance/latency improvement over Windows Audio (WASAPI), but it takes away audio from other applications which is quite a hassle. there's also FL ASIO, but you need FL Studio to have it. as far as I know it's based on ASIO4All, but doesn't snatch audio from other apps.
