just to put the info out there somewhere, let me mention that in Windows 8 each audio driver (and seemingly all 4 stereo pairs on my M-Audio NRV-10, interestingly) has in its Settings a checkbox for "let programs take exclusive control"

This is, of course, very bad and annoying for daily use as, for instance, you can't freely switch between a media player, a YouTube video, etc.

But when it comes to working with a DAW, if this is NOT checked you automatically incur 100ms of extra latency...

The upside is that Win8 latency is actually lower than for Win7, amazingly
