hello,
I'm thinking about adding a sampler to my live performance tools but, before taking a specific hardware solution, I'd like to know if anyone is using Usine as a sample player with an external midi controller to create rhythmic patterns.
Thank you,
Luca
Usine as a sampler and sampler player
From what I've seen Usine have all the basic ingredients for sample manipulations, including hardware controlled events. You just have to patch things in a way you need. If you're planning on using foot controller, I think it's got everything you could need, but you may have to invest some time into patching. If you have touchscreen PC, then you can use that without relying on external midi controller.

For what it's worth, I am loving HH3 and its sampling capabilities, especially in the area of creating dynamic rhythms. For me, of particular note in this regard is the the groove mangler. I get 2 or three of those running with 4 or 5 different samples (say one drum sample, a "noise" sample, a string sample, etc) and control parameters real time like grain size, pitch and position with one of my hardware controllers. It's really infinite (and inspiring) what you can do with that patch alone. Combined with the modular approach in HH3, how easy it is to assign midi and osc control and how well HH plays modularly with other software, well I think the whole package is pretty amazing, and easy, for creating interesting rhythms. I have yet to perform live with HH3, but am looking forward to doing so.
About a year ago I got into electronic music after decades of playing mainly acoustic jazz. Somehow I found HH2 and immediately saw that it was a tool that I could grow into in that it allows so much freedom of expression. I have tried quite a few softwares, but am still very a much a newbie at all of this...all I can say is that HollyHock was immediately appealing to me in a way that nothing else has been. I took a look at your website (which I very much enjoyed) and noticed that you have been at it for a while and that you have been looking for a platform that can replace audiomulch (if I remember correctly). So you are likely at a much different place in terms of what you are looking for and expectations, knowledge, etc. So I can only say, humbly I hope, that for me, the time I have spent getting to know Hollyhock has been more than worth it.
best of luck,
Steve

In terms of capabilities I would say it's incomparable to Audiomulch, because it goes way deeper. The only standard thing missing from Usine - there's no such things as rendering selected timeline to file, even though there is a timeline to use if needed.
