new computer crapping out

Well, I built a new computer. It's a 7700 processor, and my cpu is running 70% where my old computer ran 35% for the same workspace. Useless, tons of clicks and pops....
The benchmarks for this processor are several thousand higher than for the old one (a 5775c) so I was pretty surprised. I know benchmarks don't tell much about audio, but I would have thought they'd correlate better with cpu readings at least.
Can anyone think of anything to do about it? Short of selling this and building another 5775 machine? If I was getting pops at a low cpu, I wouldn't be surprised, but at this cpu %, it seems inevitable.
The other thing I wondered is if it could be the new intel exploit fix.... I installed a fresh win10 a couple of weeks ago. It is version 1709,build number 16299.192. I haven't done any updates to it. (I've also made sure there are no updates to my old machine.) I probably have an older iso around I could use. Does that seem at all likely??
Any thoughts?

wow, this computer can't even play one instance of iris standalone at blocksize 128! What is going on?

well, I don't run into clicks and pops until I hit max CPU load that is allowed in settings (96%). but I use 256 block size and buffer size 512 samples. there are tons of things that could go wrong with new PC build. I remember building PC with Intel motherboard and surprisingly it ran at least twice as slow on 64-bit OS for some reason. The culprit was motherboard in my case.

Oh, by the way, I didn't notice any difference in performance with updates (that supposed to patch cpu exploits). I'm using laptop with i7-3537U, and from what I've read older cpu's should have more impact on performance with updates.

Well, thanks for that info. I'm amazed to hear you can get to such high cpu numbers without clicks! I've never been able to get clean audio above about 50%..... but maybe it's because of running at the lower latency?

found the culprit.... an old pci scsi adaptor card that I forgot I put in. Probably doesn't even have current drivers available....
Much happier now, although higher cpu than my 5775c. Runs everything at 128 okay.
cheers!

Seems odd that you would be running higher cpu. Have you looked in the bios to make sure everything auto configured correctly? Memory, CPU etc. Also disabling any CPU throttling and core parking is usually a good idea for audio. Also I assume you have installed the intel chipset drivers etc? Also try with hyperthreading off (might lose some VST authorizations) . And of course run latencymon to see if there are any measurable driver timing issues. http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon

Thanks for the reminder about core parking.
LatencyMon showed a max of 175us..... not great but okay. No big spikes, no pagefaults.
I will make sure and install the chipset drivers. Those are not included in windows?

Hmm, as far as I know windows usually installs generic chipset drivers if installing basic Windows OS, but maybe different for Win10?. See if you motherboard manufacture has them available for download, and maybe see if there are any other relevant manufacturer supplied drivers that you might have missed. Check for bios updates too. Could be some bugs squashed.
The Power Management throttling CPU performance (most likely fixed when parking modified), I generally max these out the first thing I do...as well as the Graphic performance. So is the CPU% solely based on the difference of idle/Usine, or are you adding in the idle? If idle is running high...then might be masking the issue.
I know you probably already hit these points, just didn't hear explicitly and wanted to help jog...hope you get it running!
As far as OS, I run Win10 updated all the time on several computers and haven't seen any bump in CPU so far.

Idle is not running high. With core parking and intel drivers installed, I can now run my wkp. But my wkp idle with 15 vsts is still 65% vs. 35% for my 5775c. Identical wkp.... I actually haven't hooked up the midi on any but the first channel, so I don't know how it will handle actual playing!
I'll keep poking around. Maybe there are more drivers I can install, although I figured with a two-week-old windows fresh download most would be included??? It's the new 'creators release' of win 10 (with a bunch of crap this creator could do without.....)
I'm seeing the same thing in taskman, btw. Usine may compute cpu differently, but the look in taskman is pretty similar in both cases. Well below 50% on one machine and well above 50% in the other. Consistent across all cores.

I'm suspicious that perhaps an audio or video driver could be working less efficiency on the new computer. For video, try miniimizing Usine and check the cpu usage. Normally it will be less but if it is a severe amount, this could be the problem. For audio, not sure best method to check except maybe a different interface. Also could poke around in process expolrer and see if anything seems unusual. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysint ... s-explorer
Also maybe try a benchmarkig tool of some sort and see if your performance seems on par with where it should be compared to other similar setups.
