Config backup

Unread post by emmanuelistace » 13 Jul 2020, 20:10

Hi,

I have a script that handle all my dependencies, updates, etc... and should be able to fully setup an environment from scratch (usine, but also few others software).

I would like to backup usine config on my side and be able to re-import it on a "clean install".

If I backup /usine/config folder, then "loose all my data", download the same version of usine and restore the config folder, then launch another instance and import from that folder, will the recovery work ?
From what I found here (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5809) and here (viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5817), it should do the trick.

If it's the case, are there any part I can omit ? (could end up using source control to backup config, I guess trash and AudioPeaks can be ommited)

Also, are there in hh4 any built in ways to do this through command line ? (both "export config" and "import config") without just overriding the config files as in the script of the first thread ?

Thank you in advance for your help !

Best regards,

The simpliest way is to regularly backup the version of Usine you're working on with the project.
Trash could be deleted, audiopeaks also (but it's not a big deal).
Don't forget to save your devices also.
Make an export of your session with media files (audio, video...) ans it's done.
Usine is fully portable, so a copy of your version will work on any other computer, except for VST and so on.
If you are working with HH4, all the new updates will load an older version. But, if you were working with HH3 or worth with HH2 or HH1, it would be a pity to load your project in HH4.
Usine is a work in progress, every day new features are created, it becomes more and more efficient and complete, but for big steps like HH3 to HH4, or HH4 to HH5 soon, it's very difficult to have complete compatibility.

All the best

Hi Sylvain !

Sorry, I didn't remember seeing your message... :(

Thanks for the answer, I take all your remarks into account, currently hh4, I have most of my project (including workspace and some assets) under source control. So I plan on zipping most of the config considering your remarks and have a "cloud drive" solution to host them.

As I'm using scripts to get latest version and resetup my usine environment (from "clean install"), is there any command line arguments that I could use to directly import given config folder or previous installation path ? (I don't want to bypass the "update process") That would be amazing !

Thanks in advance,
Emmanuel

Hello Emmanuel ,

I'm not sure you can do what you want.
But, I just do simple scripting.
You can have a look on the scripting manual page :

Thank you Sylvain !

I haven't yet digged into the scripting side of hh4 but I sure will in the future.

In the end, I'll never have to migrate from one version to another in a context where I don't have time or pressure that would led me to mistakes, so I'll continue to migrate through the ui.
Rstoring a configuration by replacing the config folder seems to be working great and will be enough for my setup/reset/big red button bash scripts :D I also found in the end that most of the config I need to backup is lightweight and/or text files so I directly added a backup copy folder in the VCS instead of zipping them and cloud storage.

Have a nice day,
Emmanuel
