MIDI interface disconnected, can't reconnect

I have my midi footcontroller set up with a magnetic usb connector, to save wear and tear and setup time over 1000s of setups and teardowns.
Sometimes I kick it by mistake, and knock the usb loose for a fraction of a second. I used to be able to get it working by:
disabling the pedals in settings.
unplugging the pedalboard.
rescanning midi interfaces, so the pedals are not found.
plugging back in.
rescanning and resetting, so the interface is found.
re-enabling the interface.
But lately this is not working. I do not seem to be able to reset communication without restarting usine.
Is this a windows issue, or something usine could address? I'm wondering what changed. And wondering if there is a process for getting communication back without restarting.
thanks!
