Hello fellow Usiners, Usinelettes, Useriers. Series. what.
I'm here to ask the more experienced usine users and developers if something like what i'm about to describe
would be actually possible and perhaps-easily-implemented in Usine.
I have been SCOURING the web for this sort of sequencer, but with no definite results. To my absolute horror, it simply
does not exist. I have been trough Iannix, geosonix, most of the different Csound, Supercollider, Max/Msp, Chuck, Algoscore,
trackers.... Linux DAWs, Digital Performer, Metasynth, HighC..
and a ****load of other sequencers, audio programming languages/ environments and.... well you get the point.
What i am looking to do is build myself a flexible sequencer, with easily adjustable grid like on Reaper DAW and trackers.
It's simple math. if i want to build a sequence of 1/7 notes and then change back to 1/4, i SHOULD be able to do so
without hassling too much with insane amount of different solutions.
In reaper this is implemented as an user definable timeline wherein you can time a change of measurement ex. what i described above.
Along with the grid change i described above, what i need the most is CONTINUOUS PITCH SEQUENCER >GASP!<
It doesn't exist and there is no simple solution to create one. Don't talk to me about midi, which uses integers and is very much locked
so and the only way to do continuous pitch sequencing with somewhat visual representation is by using awful piano rolls and pitchbend values/portamento.
Also, i want to be able to use multiple curves (polyphony, perhaps with different color coded curves, as implemented in Csound Cecilia) to sequence the frequencies of different voices. This can be done in Iannix and geosonix, without the timed grid, without color coding.. and with insane amount of needless hassle.
What i mean with Continuous Pitch Sequencer is that i want to be able to clearly draw or manage curves and lines of pitch automation
over a strongly timed grid. The only way to send the needed precise floating point data to a musical instrument is OSC.
What is also needed is user definable frequency representation on the Y axis of the sequencer.
What i mean by that is that the composer needs to see the note value (and snap the curves to them if needed)
on the side of the sequencer, like on a piano roll. Let's say i want to sequence a slide from pitch C to pitch D on octave 0.
On midi this is done using pitchbend, portamento, slew... whatever. The message is C0, 24 and then D0 26.
On this ideal OSC / CPC sequencer the values sent would also be those (exponentially defined) fake-midi values of 24-26
but there would be a slide, interpolation of floating point precision frequency values over a user-defined time (sequencing grid)
from 24 to 26 with a multitude of interpolated values in-between and the receiving end would convert these values accordingly
from the fake-midi value to a precise Hz value to be sent into a musical voice.
Of course user-definable frequency representation also means that the composer needs to be able to
change the tuning, if the need arises. This can be done on the receiving end, or the sending source.
If before we saw note values, A1, A#1, B1, C2 and so on, on the side of the sequencer, if the composer needs to change these values to something else, to represent a different sort of tuning, he should be able to do so.
Let's say the composer needs to use a 12-tone just-intonation scale. In the settings of this sequencer this could be done,
and the pitch grid on the side of the sequencer would change accordingly to represent blocks of meaningful frequencies for the voices to snap on, slide to... whatever.
Sorry for rambling so long and i thank whoever of you who has read this far.
I just wanted to know if this can be implemented in Usine hollyhock. Could i be able to define such a GUI for myself to work with in Usine? And if so, would it require some sort of external programming or could this be simply implemented as some sort of OSC sequencer grid?
Thank you.
