Hello,

I am working on a setup and I have question: is it possible to send midi events from one patch to the next patch in a track in rack mode?

I would like to do something like this:

Rack:
-> Random Midi Player
-> Midi File Player
-> Midi Generator Plugin (eg circuit by xoxos)
-> Addictive Drums
-> Another Drum VSTi

The first three patches would generate midi events, the last two would output these events.

In this way it would be possible to mix several instances of generated or predefined midi drum loops and select the active VSTi by bypassing the patches in rack mode.

When I try to setup something like this, I get the error "Can´t send midi msg from an insert patch", so I assume it´s not possible. But perhaps I miss something.

Thanks,
Stefan

I haven't tried this in a rack myself, but you should try to use buses. Send the MIDI outputs to a "Send to Midi Bus" module in the first three patches, and retrieve the data with a "Get from Midi Bus" in the two last. All the buses should have the same name when you want to use the rack/bypass method.

You can have as many buses (MIDI or audio/data) as you like in Usine, and as far as I know there are no restrictions on where to use them, so eg. an insert patch in the sequencer can get data from a patch on input 1 in the master section. This makes it possible to create very complex routings if you wish - just remember to use some sensible naming of the buses...

BTW, I didn't know of this error message from the rack, I've just seen it from the insert slot per track in the sequencer. Makes sense though (even if the wording is a bit misleading), since the rack mode makes the patches a series of insert points.
