Hello, i've tried for few months the famous Sherman filter bank 2 and unfortunately i had to give it back.I was wondering if someone would be interested in creating a patch emulating this famous and terrible filter and maybe adding some special Usine features ?

thank you!!!!

the main problem is that I don't precisely the functionalities of the Sherman, so it's hard to create an emulation patch.
I think there is an emulation with Reaktor (?)

Hello noise2sine,

You maybe can see that : http://www.macmusic.org/software/view.p ... r/id/2042/

But remember that, even very very good, Filters and VCO are the worst emulation of hardware you can find...

Usine is not really a builder but a powerful "combinator". It does not make what other already do very well. It's rather done to "combine" the most effective you can find in effective patches.

Ooops........
I was suggesting FrOhmAge...
...without having testing it.
It's VST2, and it seems that Usine does not recognise it.
Am I doing something wrong?

@Vincent: You shouldn't by any chance have downloaded a mac version of Frohmage?

@Noise2Sine: As Vincent has pointed out, devices like the Sherman are amongst the worst to emulate, but from what I can gather from reading about it, I think you could achieve something similar although it would sound different. Try to start with connecting some analysis modules and faders to frequency and Q on filter modules and start messing around to see what happens. I guess it also could be a good idea to try different variations of connecting filters in series and parallell. You could also try to have some feedback loops in there, but beware of your ears and speakers!

Some form of distortion VST inserted here and there will also be good I think. Trying various VST EQs and resonant filters wouldn't hurt either - the Usine filters are relatively neutral and all-purpose in character.

Another thing that you may try (although I haven't got the faintest idea whether the filter bank has anything like it...), is using delays with very short delay times to create comb filtering. Inversing the delay (audio * -1) will create different combing.

Well, I know this is not what you've asked for, but anyway I hope you feel you've gotten some help.

I could have do that, but no. Tell me, do you have any Ohm Force plugs running in Usine? If yes, I'll check twice...
By chance, these are trial versions...

thank you very much for your advices and explanations.
@bsork
I really want to try what you explained but i must say i'm quite a newbie so would you mind, if you have time, to build an example so i will be able to see within yr patch and at the same time, following yr explanation.Anyway thanks a lot for patch idea.

@Vincent: No I haven't got any Ohm Force plugs, it's just that the link you entered was to a mac site that made me ask.

@Noise2Sine: I don't have much time to spare on this, but I'll see if I can come up with some simple examples within the weekend or so, and I can mail the patches to you.

The bug with ohmforce plugs is fixed.
I've made an emulation of Hematohm, I'll post an add on with the next release. (Next week ?)

Well, I've made a first attempt at coupling two filters in a way similar to the Sherman. That is if I've understood the descriptions on their website correctly...

There's a fader to glide between series and parallell connection of the filters (series: in>F1> F2> out; parallell: in>F1>out, in>F2>out), and another coupling filter 2's frequency to filter 1's frequency within +/- 4 octaves.

Instead of mailing it to Noise2Sine, I will put it in the add-ons in case anyone else is interested. So far I haven't added any envelope follower or similar, but I guess the Ohmforce emulation will have something like that(?). It's a relatively simple patch, so it shouldn't be too hard to understand. I know I should have added some comments, but I think it's about time I went to bed...

EDIT:
There seems to be something wrong with the uploading of add-ons again...

@Bsork: thanks a lot for your mail and for your patch. unfortunately I didn't have the time to test it.i would like to mention that i don't expect that your patch will sound exactly the same as the Sherman nevertheless i'm sure it will sound good and personal and that's what i'm looking for.thanks again and i let you know with a track.

Hi
Maybe you can give this a try :
http://www.funkfish.de/~blankenburg/plu ... ilter.html
It is free, and feature-wise, at least, it is quite close to the Sherman vst one.
But to be honnest, i think it is only a feature emulation, and not acccurate sound-wise.
And i haven't been convinced at all by the Reaktor module.

[Edit : oops, it is a Waldorf Dpole emualtion, and not Sherman FIlterbank... my bad]

Tone2 Filterbank3 or Bifilter2 work as mean Sherman emus. Have a very 'hardware filter' sound to me (subjective, yes).

Being that Usine is the modular system ne plus ultra, why no make your own banks from freeware VSTs?

There's not a lot of FM or RM VSTfx (and I'll make a list at home when I've the time; I only have wireless access at cafes hehe) but there's a ton of VCA, VCF, LPF, HPF, etc, etc. with step sequencers, envelope followers, and all sorts of multiband, multioutput splitting...

Plus a giant pile of tube emulations, even with harmonic overtone/partial spline drawing.

Freeware VSTs are pretty much why I not only wanted, but needed, Usine. Then again the rather inexpensive Metallurgy by Ugo, which I'm making patches for today, does much of what the Sherman does, too.
