Whoho, great stuff... Congratulations to the team; you really took Usine a big step forward

I followed the quick start guide this morning, so much improvements. As for example the settings of controls directly from the workspace, that should be a real timesaver...

Very useful to give a look at this guide to discover all enhancements and new ergonomy. Can't wait to start tests on the grid too !

Where can we post feedback on this beta? forum? mail?

One more time, congrats to the team!

Well, Alain, did you recieve it now ?
Yesterday evening, you've downloaded twice win64 version and once 32 bits version. So, you should have recieved 3 e-mails with temp folders (wich are not active anymore).
If it didn't work, try again checking your email adress and spam folder.

first impressions:
NICE INTERFACE!
LOOKS LIKE A NEW START! THX GREAT WORK!!
but....
Unfortunately it really IS a new start i'm starting to worry....
My most important Usine 5 patch (a heavy sequencer beast with lots of dynamic GUI stuff) is clearly not compatible to start with...
Will try to export VST and use it like that in Hollyhock?
Also pretty heavy on the cpu (acer netbook windows7 64bit touchscreen laptop) but will try on a more powerful computer now.
Having to reroute my setup is evident in such an upgraded and pretty version, but having to reprogram my sequencer all over again (more than 3 years of tweaking/reworking) is not really what I was dreaming about... I was hoping to be able to open it without too much hassle and maybe resize it without having to resize every slider and button on the GUI (which I already did 4 times to match different screen resolutions...) Now I'm feeling a bit stupid not having made the sequencer in Reaktor 5, which would be still compatible via VST.
I hope Hollyhock can handle Usine5 vst's inside patches to give me some time to make a full transition... Going to try it now, because it's getting worse... It seems GUI's from Usine 5 are not compatible at all in Hollyhock or am I doing something wrong? I'm just loading the patches and the convertor gives no errors. But my optimized touchscreen interfaces look like...errors or no GUI at all in fact (except for the preset manager). damn.

Anyway impressive if you're a new user starting from scratch. As for me, I'm going to try the VST option form Usine5.8 (which is by the way, more than a pity that this feature is gone in Hollyhock, even for windows computers (=downgrade?)) and if this works, I'm happy again, if not, well I don't know, it's been a long run and having to do everything again for the third time is a huge waste of time (from reaktor everything from scratch to usine back in the day and now again from the ground up to hollyhock, man, I just want to make music & be able to migrate my work to new setups with the new possibilities...).
Anyone similar experience with compatibility from Usine 5.8?

@andrewichi: I would cool it down a bit to be honest.

1.) Usine 5.8 still works just as fine as it did before..
2.) Usine Hollyhock is a BETA and the first of it's kind for that. I honestly did never expect it being so stable and far advanced in features already as it turned out to be.

So before panicking, just see what can be done about it.
I am sure that Senso and the team are more than willing to work with you on solutions (they helped me out a lot over the last few days already), but cut them some slack, it was already announced that things like VST export and some other areas will only come back over time. Things have grown much more tricky now with OSX and Win support both.

If you're not willing to go through the beta phase with it's to be expected little problems, just sit back and pretend it wasn't available yet and come back when everything is finished :-)

Cheers,

Tom

Hollyhock seems work well on OSX. but i don't have time this mouth to test it. Just a few minutes to open and smell. I will test it in june and come back to talk about my experiences with it.

Thanks to the team for this great music tool.

Just to clarify:
In no way I wanted to suggest people shouldn't say what they think about Usine Hollyhock - that isn't my call anyway.
I just found the reaction of andrewichi a bit over the top considered that this is the first beta.

Sorry if I myself was over the top with my post.

Just to clarify:
It version is called RC Release Canidate which is NOT a beta release! If a software development process is in RC state no feature changes are planned anymore for this release.

And I agree with a lot of andrewchis critics of missing features....

And the break with the ideas of Usine 5 (no IB etc.) is frustrating..... for me this Version is unusable to continue my work with a newer version of Usine.

When we create a new things they are always nostalgic people .:)
It reminds me discussion about the switch between V4 to V5?

Today I've tried to open an old .doc document with the newest version of MSWord and all the layouts have been lost...
I'm not sure that Sensomusic will be better than Microsoft on this point.
I don't speak about compatibilities of apps between OSX10.6 and OSX10.7 :)

We make a very deep effort to follow suggestions and improve the backward compatibility, but you will encounter probably troubles. We apologize for that but lets discuss about that in few weeks, time for everybody to adapt to the new possibilities?
We are at the beginning of our history.

Thumbs up Senso Team !

Testing on both Mac & Win ! Trying to find my way around things... Starting to build small workspaces etc !
Anyone else having their audio devices not showing up in the settings panel on Mac ? (10.8.3) (m-audio fw410/internal audio )
Autohide (mac dock-like) of the ,well .. dock would be nice imo
I do kinda miss the IB, but perhaps (most likely) i'm missing something that can be done that is similar.

Cheers to all of the team

Hi!
I'm really surprised to read some disapointed comments ! when guys say it was working so well with the version 5 and now it's a total mess with hollyhock ! so why don't you carry on working with the version 5 ?

why wasting your time ?

Hollyhock seems to be a new start, and i think it will be better to go deeply into Hollyhock slowly with fresh ideas, like starting with a blank page and at the same time keeping using the V5 workspace ?!

Why one version against the other ? they can work together :)

Big up to Sensomusic ,

Please carry on to push the boundaries, we love that .

@noise2sine : Did you use Usine 5? Usine 5 is pretty much perfect for me, but has a very unstable midi-implementation. The reason why I'm a little concerned/frustrated is that my favorite software will not likely be updated anytime soon. The current version of Usine 5 has a major midi problem and some minor workflow problems, which will maybe NEVER be adressed, which means a loss for me.
Hollyhock looks like a nice program with some new possibilities (though I'm really still wondering what I could do with Hollyhock, which was ultimately not possible with Usine 5...except for the Mac compatibility. Sorry, I just cannot get over the things it can't do anymore...). I like the new rack concept, but what exactly is the difference with well managed sub-patches? Apart from a little more flexible (read: less clicks to get the same) I don't see what's really the big difference. I'm also not able to make racks in/visible via midi, but I hope this is really something I didn't found out yet (I really do hope so?). And then to end with: I have the impression the patch-editor is now as heavy on the cpu as the IB objects for actually controlling your patch. I cannot work fluently on my netbook computer. Needless to say I don't care about how my wires look on the screen.
I don't want to be regarded as a hater, because I'm not. Just very demanding and critical about my main software!!! Hollyhock just isn't Usine anymore and I was a fan and a compulsive/obsessed user for many years :-)

@senso: thx 4 all the great work and the many hours of pure joy your program has given me & will as I will keep on using parts of my work as VSTs. I really do think you should do whatever YOU like with the soft and I wish you luck with the further development of Hollyhock, albeit not for me.
all the best.
over & out!

@andrewchi: I understand that very well, I was also almost unable to use version 5 because of the midi problems, but for a small company like Sensomusic it's a huge deal to rewrite the software - and as I understand it they did it in part to address exactly the problems version 5 did have...

The current Beta/RC has some things I think need more work, like CPU efficiency (my 6 Core i7 overclocked to 4.1 GHz struggles with even simple racks), the GUI layout tools are very confusing to use, I'm not sure I'm too hot on the Grid etc. but my hope is that this current version is a first step towards a much better Usine than version 5 could ever hope to be.
Some things I like a LOT more already, others I preferred in the old version...
Time will tell where it goes.

I wish the Sensomusic team the best of luck with this project.

Cheers,

Tom

@AndrewChi :

Yes i'm using Usine 5. As i'm working with hardware synth , my midi configuration is very simple, one track per machine with a different midi output for each machine. I'm using piano roll, midi freeze, accumulator and some customizabled midi patch like a midi delay with an LFO on the pitch ....

It's true that with that type of workspace i have never faced any serious problems .

what seriously bothered me, was that i couldn't export a midi file recorded with the piano roll !!

So i had to think differently and record the midi data in Ableton live thanks to the Usine VST version and then going back to Usine .... or problem with Reaktor when i wanted that the snap shot changed with the conductor, i couldn't make it work properly, so i have decided to change them manually during gigs :) .

As i have described above, my utilisation is quite basic, so i can use Usine V5 for ages because my set up is done. I do understand and respect your point of view.

Has anyone had this issue?

Patch Flush To Delete Access violation at address 0000000000FFAD9D in module 'Usine.exe'. Read of address 0000000000000000
[1:17:56 AM] Error : Internal : Patch Flush To Delete

It causes the RC of Hollyhock to crash before it loads. I was wondering if there was something that I could do to fix it on my end. I'm using Vista 64bit and it happens with both the 32 and 64 bit versions of hollyhock. I'm excited to try out the new version and hope it is as cool as I think it will be.

Hello,

Fist congratulation to all the senso team for your great work, A major step has been crossed.

For those nostalgic people of V5, no problems V5 continues to work like a charm in W8 (I Use It for month...). Now consider the V6 as a new starting point to develop new things. Regarding my patches "Best sellers" I adapts it without big problem in V6 any way V6 requires a new way of thinking about things. This is a pretty exciting thing to put on the table, the things.

Now we need time to adapt and think differently.

I'm happy to disagree here ;-)

I'd love to subscribe to an update list or rss-feed or have an automatic update check built into Usine.
That would also make sure that people use the latest version and don't report old bugs.
This could be visible on the start page (similar to the newsfeed in Studio One (but without all the advertising crap)).

My vote is in :-)

Tom

I submitted a new log file for the crashing issue. I also can't seem to attach the log file to the message because I get an error. I assume that it is a major case of user error, but I'm not sure. I posted the log file onto the message, and I also tried a .zip file of the log file which didn't work either.

I am not able to download Hollyhock from the website as a community member. Is this as intended??

And there is no 64-bit version on the FTP.

I'd like to try it out, as I am waiting to file several bug reports, in case they've already been fixed in 234.....

thanks,

Hi,

Where should i post bugs/errors etc.. ? I posted in the 'update topic' but it was deleted and i can't seem to find any dedicated hollyhock forum besides this one.

Cheers,

Jeroen

That is an interesting question: Are all subforums now open for discussions of Hollyhock?
If not, there could maybe be more Hollyhock-specific subforums?
How do you guys want to go about this?

Cheers,

Tom

Yes, you can use all sub forums specially the general and patching, maybe a good habit will be to specify , at least the first months, if we talk about the version 5 or Hollyhock.

Is the win64 bit version supposed to be able to load 32 bit plugins or only 64 bit plugins?
