Gain automation on grid racks and have it applied when direct to disk

Hi all,

I like to render my individual racks out so I can then import them into Reaper as separate stems. When I use direct to disk to render out my racks, any gain automation I have applied in the grid is not being applied - basically just renders the rack at 0db.

Steps:
* Create a rack with a vst and a pianoroll
* Add it to the grid
* Right click on the rack in the grid and select from the 'Out' section the 'out - gain' parameter. (I also have tried 'out - Stereo out' -> 'Stereo Out -gain' with no luck)
* Draw in some automation
* Play the grid line - the gain is correctly automated
* Add the rack to Direct to Disk in the toolbox
* Begin recording and play the grid line again
* The wav file for the rack does not have its gain automated.
NB: If I had also added 'Stereo out' master output to the DtD, then any racks with gain automation are correctly rendered to that master wav - it is just the individual stems which are not.

So, I was wondering if I am missing something obvious here (had a look through the forum and manual, but couldn't find anything), or if this is not possible.

Thanks.

In my opinion you should try to create a patch at the end of your rack with only audio input /vol/ audio output. Put a fader or knob to control the gain and make your automation here instead of the output gain.

Have you try to use the rearoute Asio driver from reaper ?
with those drivers, you can run reaper and Usine simultanously and send audio to and thro one another software, means tou can play with Usine and record in Reaper or send midi from Reaper to Usine then record the result from Usine to Reaper....

My 2 cents.

Good thinking mate. There's already an Audio-Thru patch in the library which I dragged to the end of my rack and that did the trick. Not sure why automating the out-gain wouldn't work, but not to worry, this has solved my issue.
Cheers.

Hi oli. I ended up solving the issue with a volume patch, but what you say has got me thinking of some possibilities, esp. the reaper midi -> usine -> reaper type path. In general I prefer the reaper piano roll and this could help me avoid what I am doing now of saving out .mid files in reaper and then importing into hollyhock's piano roll.

I'll take a look, and try to think about the best strategy:
- prefader (actual) to get the best resolution and gain for the output in order to remix it in another DAW
- postfader (your suggestion) to reflect the real volume, but lost of resolution.

the best way should be to have the choise , pre or post fader output rack recording.

Yeah I think making it an option to be pre/post fader would be optimal.
Alternatively, don't make any changes at all. It is pretty easy to just drop a volume patch at the end of the rack and then automate that to change the overall rack volume.
Cheers.

a comment on rearoute : I find it not that "solid" but the reatream is incredibly robust and works fine inside a computer as well as between two computers.

Is there some news about this record option pre/post fader ?

It should be great to have it. Yesterday i recorded the repetition and i recorded all my rack output and the two instruments input. But i worked with real time audio processing in live and mix all the rack with the instrument. This music is totaly dependent of the balance between each source.

The repetition recording is totaly out of focus and inexploitable ...
Thanks

waiting for a solution, you can easily create a simple patch at the end of your rack , just add a volume module + a panner and use them with midi learn to mix your work, this way all your changes will be recorded ?

I try to find the best way for this Volume Patch at the end of the racks but i have two question.

1 - Is there a way to detect the Rack Number ? In the patch (see picture below) i want to add a 'Current rack number' module, but i can't find it.

Image

2 - When i send the rack output to an other rack (with an 'AUX out Device' that i patched), how can i send in Pre-fader with this Volume Patch Active?

Thank you.
