Help With Record Function

Unread post by deadcellent » 26 Jan 2020, 16:05

Hello, l love this program.
Using it as my playback rig on a Mac Book Pro to run audio, video & lighting sync'd to the grid/ laid out in layers.

i've used other modular softwares & the previous version of (HH3) / now using HH4

Could someone give me some information. I'm trying to record the midi fader/knob/button movements/triggers I have mapped to a NanoKontrol2 (White) / so I can then drag & drop the rack/programmed fixture to the grid to sync up with the music. or drag the rack to the grid then record?

I have the fixture dragged to a patch in a rack. Created a fader/knob or button. Mapped the fader/knob/button to the controller & hit the record button on the side Menu Bar, run the software engine & wiggle the fader. I only sometimes get the mapped fader moves below the fixture in the rack.

I'm missing something. I could need sleep! Lol

EDIT: Its my intention to load fixtures into racks then map its parameters to my controller, then record the fader moves to that specific fixture in its rack, then drag the rack to the grid. The movements of the faders/knobs/buttons will be in time with the audio track I'll already have loaded onto the grid.
This way the video loaded, audio track & then the fixtures will all run in sync. If any of this sounds incorrect please let me know.
I'm currently writing/recording alot & lightly building my show using the new version. I'm also going to use this for a small scale/venue size surround sound feature. I really really like this program. Its very much the limit of your imagination with programming out a show to then loosely play over with specific cues/changes

Also, any tips or reminders for smoother playback once everythings laid out on the grid please let me know. As it is, I would like to have at least 4-5 / 3-4minute songs laid out on the grid with audio/ backing video & lighting cues.
Its 8 leds/ 4 worklights(Dimmer)/ Atomic Strobe/ 2 Blacklights & 4 Moving Beam Lights.
Enttec DMX USB PRO MK2 for lighting. HDMI out to projector for video. Using a digital Presonus Via Firewire as my audio card & sometimes using a Behringer 404.

I'm trying to create a small scale Avid type setup. Digital board as an audio card using a couple audio plugins. With video/lighting its a mutated version.

The audio files will be MP3 not Wav so that should cut down file size for that. Is there any Video Codec better suited for this program?? I want at minimum 1080 resolution since my short throw projector is only that. I was going to get a 4K soon. If theres a specific codec please let me know.
Between codec for audio/video & not overly intense lighting cues. I was thinking playback should run smooth. I'm thinking I'll pickup a new desktop dedicated for live playback also

Hi. if I'm not mistaken it can use hardware accelerated decoder if video's codec is supported (usually H264), otherwise you just need to seek for balance between compression amount and file size. high compression might use more CPU, but bigger filesize can also create bottleneck.
also, have you tried new GPU acceleration mode in HH4? if I'm not mistaken it's also accelerating video engine.

as for general smoothness in Grid, if you use presets in it, make sure your patches don't have unnecessary 'save in preset' flags in modules that support it but don't need to save state in your use case. lesser data sets are recalled - smoother the preset changes.

can't comment on dmx stuff though, didn't have experience with light setups yet.

Currently, there's no easy way to record automation with MIDI controlers, but you can use a piano roll to record your cc and then drag the small number of the midi file on the grid

I was using the numerical type of programming then applying the buttons with manual adjustments on the grid. I can do that. The only thing I thought was strange was after I finish with automation adjustments, click another layer & the points disappear on the one you just set, which is fine but I couldn't figure out how to go back & view those points again for readjustments. This is the grid I'm referring to. When you manually adjust the automation line creating points, click another layer to work & those are gone is all.

This program is still a learning curve for me but doing pretty good for what I need it for. I'll mess with the midi record more & figure out some method.
Thank you.

Record midi is a good way to get alot of main points going quickly which typically can always use going back manually & fine tuning the cues/points if needed.
Using it like this will give me ways to quickly/roughly get a visual performance going for a track. Definitely digging this software & thank you for the extra information. I'm very close to performing a show with it finally.
Psychedelic Industrial Grunge you could call it. Live guitar, some full on drumming & vocals. Lighting, backing tracks & a large video screen behind me.
