vista uses more ram. imho it does not add something to the OS.
at least audio setup isnt better with vista.

need a new laptop too. bit off topic I ask myself why not go for external vst players as muse, neko or (recently) SMPro?
this would transfer vst capabilitiy problems to external gear, and for production I could get a quality laptop with low specs but high quality (eg. IBM).

SMPro offers new players:

v-machine could be kewl: 630$, plays as much vst's as ~ 2.4ghz/1GB RAM PC :)
bad for now: still loads of bugs, noisy fan

Hi,
I use XP SP3 on 2 laptops and a desktop and it works fine.
If it helps, my laptops are a HP 6820s (now replaced with 6830s) and a sony VGN-NR21S (texas instrument firewire chipset).

i bought a new HP 8530w and it came with a vista and xp pro licence. unfortunately the vista is only 32 bit so for my money there was no point using it. the ram limit in xp (or vista 32) is 3GB (approximately..). i got 4GB in mine and it only see's 2.99GB - still, it's more than the 2GB i had in the old machine and i haven't hit the ram limit with anything in the new machine yet. 64 bit vista can use a lot more ram than that but make sure you have 64bit drivers for ALL of your equipment - some of the soundcard manufacturers in particular still haven't got their act together on them yet!!

as an add on to amiga909's suggestion, there also a new box called a plugiator (http://www.use-audio.com/plugiator.htm) made by the guys from creamware that i've heard really good things about and it's really cheap - might be worth a look?

save your money, install xp instead of vista and modify your os to boot straight into a vst host (chainer, full fledged daw, whichever you prefer), disable all the useless services you dont need and have your laptop as a dedicated vst/vsti box instead. spend that money you were going to spend on the smpro on a customised audio production laptop instead, and sync them. ;)

thats what i would do, probably hook up a midi pedal to the vst laptop aswell to control program changes etc.

hi btw, im new.

welcome fanboi :)

ur are right the v-machine isnt much more than a laptop anyway (I believe its a linux with an embedded windows, quite simple to do). and its not clear by now if v-machine is quality or not.
advantages for v-machine:
- tiny, fits in your pocket
- a very good latency (at least in the demo video they say ~1ms)
- no windows OS fuckery
- vst 'feels' hardware
- had too many bad experiences with all-purpose, walmart laptops

Hello,

Do you think XP Pro SP3 is better than SP2?
